National Library Week (April 6 – 12) is upon us, and this year’s theme is Drawn to the Library! To celebrate, RCLS is excited to announce a new monthly drawing contest for our patrons. Every month, starting April 1st, we’ll put out a new prompt for local artists to submit their drawings to the library. Winners will be featured in a special 2026 RCLS Calendar. April’s theme is “Favorite Book Character”. To participate, simply submit a drawing matching the monthly theme to ANY of our RCLS branches before the deadline. Please include your name and age (and a way to contact you if you want to know you’ve been selected). OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Most of all, remember to have fun! Keep an eye on our social media at Facebook and Instagram for future themes (or just ask your local librarian)!
We are pleased to announce that the Katherine Haynes Walkup Collection will now be housed at the Historical Research Center (HRC) after being moved from the Smyrna Public Library. The Walkup Collection consists of Smyrna history files, genealogy files, family histories and photographs. The collection was originally donated by the family to the Smyrna Public Library in 2013 after the passing of their mother Katherine Walkup, a prominent figure in Smyrna and Rutherford County’s historical and literary organizations. She served on the Linebaugh Library Board, the Board of Directors for the Sam Davis Memorial Association, the Rutherford County Nursing Home, and was a founding member of the Rutherford County Historical Society. The collection will serve as an excellent resource for our patrons and community members that visit the HRC and Rutherford County Archives every day! Thank you to the family of Katherine Walkup for allowing us to move the collection where it will better the serve the community.
