Meet RCLS’ New Director: Luanne James

From Nicole Steiner: If you could add any one thing to our library, regardless of cost or feasibility, what would it be and why?

Smyrna was my first stop when I visited with all of you during the interview process. I will admit, I was in awe of everything that all of you have accomplished in such a small space!  The one thing I would like to do at Smyrna is expand the current building square footage.

From Catherine Cone: What’s a crazy story from your library career?

Texas – one of my employees told me “there are two men washing their hair in the large permanent water fountain right outside the front door.”  I then had to repeat that statement to the non-emergency police dispatcher…I know she was trying really hard not to burst out in laughter on the call!

South Carolina – a Page informed me that there was a family sitting on the floor at the NF600 stacks eating a Bojangles family box meal…drinks and all.  I walked over to let the family know they could not eat an entire Bojangles family meal box inside the library.  One of the family members informed me that they were eating in the cookbook section and thought it would be OK!

From Jessica Bruce: If you could live in any fictional place, where would it be? Who is your favorite author?

If I could live in any fictional place it would be inside the apartment complex of The Big Bang Theory tv show.

I have two favorite authors – Janet Evanovich and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.

From Susan Todd: What are you most looking forward to about your new job? Do you have any pets?

I am really looking forward to working with all of you to serve all the residents of the county. Together we can grow all of your services and programs and bring in new visitors to all of our locations, including the bookmobile.

I have a dilute tortoiseshell cat that is 14 years old and a 4-year-old ragdoll tortoiseshell.  My son has a 2-year-old tabby with “white spotting” pattern we just recently adopted. There is never, ever a dull moment in the house!

From Ollie Miller: What’re your plans to effectively liaison between library staff and the board when our opinions differ?

My plans are to establish an open line of communication with everyone. I would do this by listening to both library staff and board and make sure that all viewpoints are equally represented.  With the open line of communication established, we can build a collaboration and move forward with a shared goal that everyone can agree on.

From Trey Gwinn: The last question was serious, so let’s end on something silly: Would you rather be able to fly (you can go as fast as you want but you can only hover about a foot off the ground) or would you rather have the ability to snap your fingers and conjure a breath mint out of thin air? Why?

I would choose to have the ability to snap my fingers and conjure a breath mint out of thin air. I chose this over flying (no matter how high I am off the ground) because I do not enjoy turbulence, air pockets, jet lag, cold “hot” meals…the list goes on!
